Example text

Although the theatre continued to struggle (1928 would be their lowest year at the box office) Deeter’s work with the cast of In Abraham’s Bosom had a huge impact on him, and he was determined to make plays and performances about the Negro experience a part of the Hedgerow mission. 34 A Sustainable Theatre It was a daunting task. Hedgerow didn’t even pay salaries to its “resident” actors, so the thought of assembling enough Negro actors to perform in repertory seemed utterly idealistic. But Deeter had connections in New York and in Philadelphia, and in the summer of 1929, he coaxed the cast of Abe back to Hedgerow for a revival that alternated with The Emperor Jones and an evening of Paul Green one-act plays (White Dresses, No Account Boy, The Man Who Died at Twelve O’Clock).

It remains for Madeline to deal with the demise of her family while struggling for the ideal of an ever-changing but honest America. Deeter was deeply moved by the play and confided to Glaspell 15 years later, “I cannot tell the story of how Inheritors made possible a new kind of theater and even if I could people are not interested, they just don’t care. ”17 Inheritors also stirred in Deeter that dream that a life in the theatre could also be about ideas. He never spoke of himself as a theorist or an intellectual, for him it was always about understanding the play and making it work.

Then they did three of Paul’s one-acters, The Emperor Jones 37 doing splendid work to an average of about thirty-two dollars while the rest of the list stood at ninety. Their present averages in Abe are second only to Beloved Leader in this year’s list. These facts naturally encourage our whole theater and make it easier for our colored part time group to make the personal satisfaction necessary for the development of a solidarity of their own. I have hopes of a comedy from the Gilpin Players but failing that I have no other option to lay before them at this time.
